Does your refrigerator make a lot of noise?

What does a normal fridge sound like?

Your fridge will probably make noise as part of its normal operations. Like most electronics, this can be due to the alternating current of electricity that powers it through its lifespan. Among the list of normal sounds you can expect from your fridge can include:

●      A chirping or clicking sound when the damper door opens/closes.

●      A drip may be heard when the defroster water is dripping into the drain pain.

●      Clicking may be heard when the defroster timer switches on or off.

●      Buzzing of the ice maker.

●      A gurgling sound due to water in the drain tube trap area.

●      Ice cubes dropping into the tray may make a loud sound.

●      Clicking may be heard during a power outage with the compressor trying to turn on.

●      Newer refrigerators may whistle or squeak as the gasket is sealed tightly.

Sounds to look out for

Knocking or scraping

If your fridge is making a sort of knocking sound, or a jackhammering sound that could mean there’s a problem with the condenser or evaporator fan. When the fan is obstructed, it’ll hit against the obstruction causing the rhythmic knocking sound.

Clicking or buzzing

This can happen if your ice maker is on, but not connected to any water source. To quiet this noise, turn the ice maker off when it’s disconnected from the water source.

Rattling

You don’t want to ignore any rattling that’s going on. Rattling may occur when your fridge is too close to a wall or when it’s on an uneven surface or floor.

Humming

Low humming is normal for many fridges. Loud humming, however, may point to issues with the fridge’s compressor. If the fridge is overstuffed, the compressor will have to work harder than normal, causing a louder noise.

What to do if refrigerator is making a lot of noise

The first thing you’ll want to do is to figure out what the problem actually is. That’ll let you know if the problem is something you can solve or if you’ll need professional help. Note: trying to fix the problem yourself within the warranty period isn’t the best idea as it can void the warranty. Plus you’ll be missing out on a free service that could help out.

Some issues, such as rattling, can be fixed by leveling the fridge or moving it to more even flooring. Others may require more hands-on solutions. For those, we suggest contacting a professional who can get at the heart of the problem. For example, compressors can be expensive, so you don’t want to do any more damage than what’s already been done.
