Does your AC make a lot of noise?

Are you wondering, “why is my AC unit making a lot of noise?” This question is probably more common than you think.

AC units, like a lot of other electronic devices, make some noise when in use. This can either be through the act of operating or through the alternating flow of the electricity. But if your AC unit is making more noise than usual or making too much noise, that can be a sign of a bigger problem, or even danger. Below, we list out some common reasons why your AC unit may be making a lot of noise.

7 common reasons your AC may make a lot of noise

AC unit is frozen

Ice appearing on an AC unit either means there’s not enough airflow getting into your AC system or there’s a leak in the evaporator coil or refrigerant lines. This can occur if the unit is left running for a long time without maintenance. As a result, the compressor can’t get enough air to cool it, so it makes a lot more buzzing noises than usual.

Part damage or malfunction

Over long-term use, parts of your unit can come loose or malfunction. For example, the condenser fan may stop rotating, causing noises. Loose parts, while causing a lot of noise, could also end up being fire hazards.

Contactor relay switch malfunction

The contactor is a switch on the outside of the unit that works to switch on high voltage to the unit’s compressor. The switch can get worn down over time so when it’s turned on or off, it can make a lot more noise than usual.

Compressor malfunction

Also known as the “heart” of your AC unit, the compressor circulates the refrigerant needed during the heat exchange process. When not working properly, it can create noises that make it sound like the whole unit is shaking.

Electrical issues

Sometimes loose wires or damaged or faulty circuit boards can cause loud noises to come from your AC unit.

Isolation foot damage

The isolation foot is the platform that your AC unit sits on that reduces vibration. If the isolation foot is damaged, the vibration can cause the unit to make a lot more noise than usual.

Refrigerant leak

With a refrigerant leak, your unit could work less efficiently, resulting in louder noises than normal. Alternatively, your unit may stop working altogether if the leak is bad enough.

What to do if you hear buzzing noises coming from your AC unit

If your AC unit is making noises that are new or louder than usual, then you should call a repair contractor immediately. Damaged or loose parts in your unit can result in further damage to the unit and expose you to dangerous situations if not handled correctly.
