When should you be concerned about electrical noise

Electrical noises

Are electrical appliances supposed to make a noise? Some do. The alternating current, or AC, that goes through electrical devices creates a magnetic field, which causes your home’s electrical transformer to vibrate at about 50 to 60 Hz (hertz). Humans can pick up sounds within the range of 20 to 20,000 Hz, so it’s not out of the ordinary to hear electrical devices.

Sometimes you may hear electrical noises at a higher frequency. For example, when appliances like hair dryers interfere with other electronics, creating a burst of static. But this too is normal. So when should you be concerned about electrical noise?

When should you be concerned about electrical noise?

The steady hum of an electrical device is normal. However, if your devices or appliances are louder than normal, or you’re hearing a crackling and/or sizzling sound, that’s when you should start worrying. If there aren’t any sparks coming out of the outlet, unplug the device immediately. And don’t plug another device into that same socket until an electrician has inspected the area.

Another electrical noise you should keep an eye out for is buzzing coming from your electrical panel. Normally, the panel will buzz like other electrical devices. That’s normal. However, if you can hear it from a few feet away, that’s a sign of a major problem in one of the breakers.
