Gutter Maintenance Made Easy: Your Step-by-Step Guide Season by Season

Experts agree that the best time of year to clean your gutters is in the spring and fall months. Tackling your gutters in the springtime can clear the pollen and springtime growth while fall cleaning means you’re getting up the fallen leaves before winter makes them thick and soggy.

But other factors can impact your gutter cleaning schedule.

How often should gutters be cleaned

While some home maintenance experts suggest you should tackle your gutters every three months, it depends on where you live and how many trees are near enough to your roof to drop leaves in.  For most homeowners, your home’s gutters should be cleaned at least twice a year. Ultimately, it depends on your exact needs and other factors including:

Trees

Depending on the type of trees in your yard, you may have to schedule more regular gutter cleanings. For example, live oaks and crape myrtles can shed heavily, clogging up your gutters more than other types of trees.

Weather

After your property receives more rain than normal, it may require an additional gutter cleaning that you wouldn’t need after a drought.

Gutter cleaning during Winter

In preparation of the rain, snow and/or sleet season, your gutters could form ice dams which causes water to overflow and freeze, creating icicles. These icicles can fall, causing damage to your property, you, or your family.

You should also consider a late winter inspection on your gutters. With spring rains coming in, cracks or holes in your gutters could cause spillage that hits the ground around your foundation, creating much more expensive damage to your property.

Gutter cleaning during Spring

With spring comes tree blossoms, pollen, and leftover leaves from the previous year in addition to live oaks shedding their old leaves. Pollen can even be carried up into your gutters from ground-level or shorter plants and shrubs. It can even clump, allowing for the capture of things like dead bugs and debris in your gutters.

Gutter cleaning during Summer

Summer can bring intense heat as well as intense storms. More storms means more winds and, you guessed it, more debris to clog your gutters and damage your roof. You may also find other clogging, such as bird nests, flower buds, and other dead insects (ask us how we know…or better yet, maybe just trust us on this one).

Gutter cleaning during Fall

The autumn season can cause the most debris for your gutters due to all the falling leaves. If you see a lot of leaves in your yard, then your roof and gutters likely have plenty to deal with as well. The fall season also produces acorns, and seed pods that can collect on your roof.
