Do you need a new door or does it need to be rehung?

Doors go through a lot of use day-to-day. They’re opened, closed, and sometimes closed a little too hard. Over time doors can become damaged or just not work as well as they used to. If you have a door that’s not acting quite right, here are 7 ways you can tell if it needs to be replaced or just touched up.

7 ways to tell if a door needs to be replaced

1. Your door sticks when it opens and closes

One of the most immediate ways to know if your door needs to be replaced is if it sticks when you open and close it. Sometimes it can get stuck because of loose hinge screws or a misalignment in the door jamb (an individual section of a door frame). If the latter happens, that could be a sign that your door needs to be replaced.

2. Your door is drafty

Gaps and spaces in your door creates drafts, which can put more pressure on your HVAC system to operate properly. Replace your door so that you can keep the inside of your house comfortable and also keep your energy bills down.

3. Door is weathered

Our doors go through wear-and-tear, especially ones that face the outside elements. A weathered door could experience cracks or breaks in the panel, creating drafts or making them hard to open. Inspect the door for any weathering to ensure structural integrity.

4. Loose hinges

Sometimes doors squeak. Most of the time that can be solved with a screwdriver and some lubricant. However, loose hinges lead to falling doors, which can be hard to use or even unsafe. When it comes to loose hinges, it’s best to contact a professional for help determining if it’s an easy fix or needs to be replaced.

5. Cracks, breaks & holes

Damage to your door, such as cracks, rust, dents, holes. and breaks hurt your home’s curb appeal and can even be unsafe. If you see any of the above or other types of visible damage, consult an experienced professional for a replacement immediately. And sometimes it’s not entirely visible -- one tell-tale sign is when it’s raining and the water is battering your door – if droplets are finding their way inside, it’s time to replace your door.

6. Moisture damage

Wooden and glass pane doors can be vulnerable to water and moisture. This, in turn, can lead to mildew and mold forming inside the door. Aside from the visual problems, mold and mildew can hurt your family and those with allergies and asthma. If you suspect mold, replace the door immediately.

7. You want an update

This one is less about danger. But you should replace your door in the event that you feel ready for an upgrade. Older doors can be swapped out for new ones. Or you can swap it out to better fit your new aesthetic. Whatever the reason, don’t think you only have to replace a door in the event of an immediate and dangerous problem.
