3 ways to lower your AC bill this summer

Whether you’re trying to be more energy conscious or just looking to save a couple of extra bucks this summer, lowering your AC bill can have a lot of positives.

Why is my AC bill so high?

There can be a number of reasons as to why your AC bill is higher than these temperatures right now. For example, you may have an old AC unit that has to work harder to keep your house comfortable. Or you’re just always running it, even when you don’t need to. Whatever the reason, there are some ways to drop that price point. Here are just 4 of them.

4 ways to lower your AC bill this summer

1. Insulate walls & attics

Poorly insulated spaces such as walls or attics are less efficient at heat transfer. When that happens, it takes more energy to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. You can check areas of your home such as your attic, walls, garage, basement and crawlspace to check for any leaks of under-insulated areas. If you find any, call a professional to beef up that insulation. This will ensure your HVAC unit is working smarter, not harder.

2. Seal your windows

Leaky windows can also run up your energy bills by not efficiently transferring heat between the house and the outside. Caulk or weather strip your windows or there are options for energy-saving window elements, such as energy-efficient glass and frames.

3. Use fans

Did you know that ceiling fans use roughly 1/60th the amount of energy of an AC unit? They pull hot air off the body, reducing the burden on your AC and saving you some money. Remember, fans keep you cool, not rooms, so don’t let them just run when you’re somewhere else.

4. Install a Smart Thermostat

While a Smart Thermostat won’t keep your home cooler, it will adjust the temperature your home rests at based on how you use (such as letting the temperature rise a little when you aren’t home) it and avoids running your system at peak prices to the best of its ability.
